The name Dermopter means "skin-winged", which refers to the flap of skin which extends between the fore and hind limbs. These flaps are not wings, and these "flying lemurs", or colugos, do not fly. Rather, they glide through the forest canopy. They are closely related to Primates, Insectivores and bats, but they are now considered to reside in a distinct Order. They are herbivirous, subsisting on young leaves, buds and fruits of the trees in which they live. They hang by large claws of the hindfeet, and climb suspended in quadrapedal fashion similar to sloths.
